Trang
Hotel, Phranakorn.
The Trang Hotel is a
relatively cheap, well located hotel suitable for anyone who still likes to
stay within easy reach of backpacker areas but enjoys a bit of peace and
quiet away from the travelling hoards. Ratings wise this would be in
the 2 star category.
The hotel's pretty old but it has been renovated and
even has a small pool. It gets a mix of guests, Thais as well as
foreigners and is well worth considering if you want to be within easy
walking distance of both the river and Khao San Rd but also like your hotel not to be showing
movies 24 hours a day in the front entrance and who have staff who wear
uniforms. If you need to make travel arrangements, Vieng Travel, which
is recommended in the Lonely Planet, is located on the ground floor of
the hotel.

Sawasdee Khao
San Inn, near Khao San Rd
Not actually on Khao San Road, but only five minutes
walk away. The location can't be beat, especially if you're coming either
to or from the airport as the hotel is located next to the stop for the
Airport Bus. So no messing around with taxis, no dragging bags of
souvenirs along the road - just walk out of the hotel and onto the bus.
You can walk to Sanam Luang & the Grand Palace in about 15 - 20 minutes
and it's easy to catch a bus into the city centre from Rachadamnoern Rd, 2
minutes walk away.
Rooms start at around 500 Baht/night for a single.
More than your usual Khao San Rd flophouse but the Sawasdee chain of
budget hotels have a reputation for providing good quality, clean rooms at
sensible prices. Don't expect any frills but you'll have a safe,
clean, AC room with cable TV.

Woraburi Khaosan Inn,
Khao San Road
I first saw Khao San road in 1997, back then it was
still 100 baht rooms in chipboard mansions. However, since the late
90s all that has changed and the eastern end of the street has gone
(relatively) upmarket. The main reason being many backpackers have
more money to spend nowadays and independent travel is no longer just for
20 somethings. Older folks, like me, like to travel cheaply and
visit the same types of bars, restaurants and shops as the kids but
but we also like to stay somewhere comfortable. If you're looking to
relive your backpacking days the you can get a new clean, no frills
ensuite AC room from 500 baht/night. Good location if you need to
make other travel plans as there are loads of tour agents within 2 minutes
walk.

Sawasdee
Sukhumvit Inn, Sukhumvit 57
This is a good option for people who either aren't
interested in staying in the heart of backpacker land or just need a place
to sleep before hopping on the bus to Koh Chang. Rooms start at around 700
baht for a double.
The hotel is within easy walking distance of Ekkamai
bus station, from where you catch the bus to Trat & Koh Chang. If you've got a few bags then expect to pay 35 baht for
the hotel to bus station
taxi ride. It's also midway between Thonglor & Ekkamai skytrain
stations, so getting into the centre of town is quick and easy.
Sukhumvit 57, is a relatively quiet side street, however, if you're
looking for a huge selection of good trendy restaurants and bars, the
types that expat farangs and locals go to then the neighbouring street,
Sukhumvit 55 (Soi Thonglor) is the place to head. Also nearby, on
the main Sukhumvit Road, is a huge multiplex with lots of shopping and
state of the art movie theaters. Virtually all movies are in English
with Thai subtitles so, if you want to kill an evening, head here.

One other option that's worth considering is this
one recommended by Ken"
The Suan Dusit Place hotel (http://www.dusitplace.com/)
on Thanon Ratchisima (near the zoo and royal palace). It's a sort of
training hotel that's adjacent to the Rajabhat University. Nice rooms
with king size or twin beds, bath and shower, TV, breakfast included for
600 baht single/800 baht double. They've an internet cafe, laundry
service, pool, excellent Thai massage facility and a restaurant with
fantastic, moderately priced food (typically 60-70 baht/dish).
There's also a very good bakery at the university. The only problem we
found was that no taxi driver has heard of it - you have to tell them
the street or mention the university otherwise you might end up at the
luxury Dusit Thani.
