Trang
Nana Hotel, Sukhumvit Soi 4.
Look up family
friendly hotels in Bangkok and it's unlikely you'll find Nana Hotel listed.
Not because there's anything intrinsically wrong with the hotel, simply
because it's right in the heart of the Sukhumvit girly bar scene.
Cross the road and you've got a couple of dozen go-go bars vying for your
wallet.
Add to this that you can't help but trip over bargirls
in the lobby and you'll get the idea that this isn't really a place to bring
the kids. However, it's cheap, the rooms are spacious and comfy, it's
location is good for anyone into doing some shopping, there's easy access to
the skytrain and there's no shortage of things to see and do at night.
A couple of nights stay here will give you an insight
into why loads of single guys visit Bangkok and you're guaranteed to have
loads of fun people watching. Put it on your list of possibilities if
a large, friendly. low cost place in the heart of the city is what you're
after. Double rooms from 1200 baht/night.

Narai
Hotel, Silom
If you want proximity to shopping but without the
distractions of scantily clad young Thai females, then the Narai might be
for you. It's an old hotel but was rejuvenated a couple of years
ago. It's your generic low cost package tour hotel. a double
room will set you back around 2,000 baht/night. Loads of F&B outlets
catering for all tastes, rooms that you'll be happy to stay in but wont
get over excited about and a good location in downtown Bangkok.
Their in house pizza restaurant makes pretty good pizzas that I'd rate
above Pizza Hut offerings, plus they often do good deals on all you can
eat pasta buffets.
The nearest skytrain station is 10 minutes walk
away. Shopping malls are a similar distance away plus the nightly
street market on Silom/Patpong is within easy walking distance.
There's no shortage of places to stock up of pirate DVDs, CDs, clothing
etc. A stroll south will bring you to Charoen Krung Rd -here
you'll find the Oriental Hotel and ferry piers.
If you want to escape from the tourists, this area
of Silom gets a lot of visitors, the hop in a taxi and head to the
restaurant area on New Sathorn, Soi 14-16 road- (real name Thanon
Naratiwat Rachanakarin) which is about 5 minutes drive away.
Here you'll find an area with well over dozen small restaurants,
most are converted houses and they mainly attract Thai office staff.
Some have live bands, some are themed but all are cheap and very well
designed.

Pathumwan Princess, near Siam Square
This hotel adjoins the popular MBK Shopping Mall.
Cross the road and you're in Siam Square. If you have teenage kids
in tow and need to keep them amused then this might be a good place to
stay. MBK is a huge shopping mall full of small stalls and shops
selling everything from electronics & DVDs to cheap clothing. Plus
there's an excellent state of the art cineplex on the top floor. You can
pretty much get all the stuff you'll be looking to buy under one roof and
without the hassle of carrying bags long distances to get them back to
your hotel. Siam Square is where Thai teenagers hang out at weekends, so
you'll find loads of shops catering to students and cheap places to eat. A
definite level or two up in standard of the rooms means that you'll be
paying a minimum of 3,000 baht/night to stay here.
There are two other shopping malls the upmarket
Discovery Centre and the chain store Siam Centre both within 10 minutes
walk. Add to this the fact the hotel has one of the largest and best
equipped fitness centres in Bangkok and the skytain being only a few
minutes walk away, and you've got a sensible choice as a base for
shopaholics or families. The 'must see' Jim Thompson's house
is also only a few minutes walk away, perfect if you need to escape from
the hustle and bustle for an hour or two.

Novotel
Siam Square
Set in the heart of Siam Square this 3 star hotel is
popular with business travellers and tourists.
It's around 10 minutes walk from the Pratunam
Princess (above) and as such will appeal to the same type of visitor.
The main difference is that this is part of the world wide Novotel chain
and so you're guaranteed some international standards when it comes to
staff training and service. Good location, good rooms, good staff
for around 3,000 baht/night.
When it comes to hotels like this they're the same
the world over, you'll know what you're getting before you arrive.
The restaurants here merit a mention, I've eaten at
two of them and the food, especially at 'Foccazia' is very good. The
hotel's nightclub in the basement 'CM2' (Siam Square. . . get
it?) is also a well know hangout for Bangkok's beautiful people.
