White Sand Beach, Koh Chang Photos
Whilst the beach, particularly the
northern end, is as nice as ever, the roadside in White Sands continues to
be filled with uninspiring concrete shop units or hotel blocks that spring
up in place of older bungalows or small shops. Garbage and sewage are
a problem as is the lack of water, with many resorts relying on water
tankers. These issues have yet to be solved, and with the addition of
more hotel rooms on the beach, can only get worse.
But visitors seem to like the place and it is a good
spot for a night out.

North of the beach looking south

You can still find a room for 300 - 500 baht at the northern end of the
beach and rooms don't come much closer to the sea than these.

The new hotel blocks at KC Grande Resort - appear to have a huge pool /
garden area between them and the beach

To get down to the beach, follow what is signposted as 'Publics Access
Beach' i.e. this open sewer with footpaths on either side

On the road at the northern end of the beach, the road heads up hill and
away from the beach just past the 7-eleven

Tonsai Restaurant, nice place for a meal and site of the original
'Treehouse', Koh Chang's most famous backpacker haunt.

One of the many tour agents. The vast majority aren't really tour
agents, they just sell tickets. Prices for trips, tours etc are the
same at these agents.

Another new hotel, Grand Lagoon 2. Sit on your balcony and watch the
traffic pass by - lovely way to spend a evening

In the centre of the beach, outside Kacha Resort. Shops, shops and more
shops - the majority all selling pretty much the same thing.

More tailors & souvenir shops near Kacha - this is why you came to
Koh Chang isn't it?

Kacha Resort's wall of sun loungers. No need to move more than 20
metres from the pool for the entire 2 weeks of your vacation.

Nearby, just south of Kacha Resort, this used to be the site of another 'Publics
Access Beach'. However, it was washed away in Oct 2006 and is now
just a pit of rotting garbage which, of course, no -one is responsible for
cleaning up.

Opposite BanPu Resort are a couple of the best cheap eateries on White Sand
beach. They are adjacent to each other, both have menus in English and
if you don't want to pay a premium for eating on the beach are good
places to grab lunch or a dinner.

All beaches in Thailand have been rated 1-5 stars, White Sand is a 4 star
beach. Pretty impressive - or it would be if anyone knew what the
criterion were for judging a stretch of sand.

The sign above is near a walkway down to the beach, from where you get this
view if you look north.

The road then heads up a slight hill, past Grand View Resort, more new shop
units & Changburi Resort to 'Little Pattaya'. The main beer bar
enclave on Koh Chang. New apartments have been built just behind the
bars catering to visitors with a desire to stay longterm within stumbling
distance of their temporary girlfriend's place of work.

Another 200 metres up the hill, past Plaloma Resort and opposite Top Resort
you'll find what has become a 'restaurant row'. German, Scandinavian
and Irish food & drink all adjacent to each other. If you get bored of Thai
food have a wander up here.
