Tourists stranded by rough seas rescued - January 3, 2008

Trat _ Tourists stranded on two small islands by high seas which pounded the eastern coastline over the New Year were rescued yesterday.

Two boats took five tourists off Koh Bai Tang, about three kilometres off shore, said Surachai Burapanontachai, chief of the Trat water transport office.

Rescue boats also evacuated 30 Thai and foreign holidaymakers from nearby Koh Wai. They could not make the trip back earlier because of the rough weather.

Mr Surachai warned that small boats should remain ashore as more strong winds and high waves were predicted in the coming days.

Issarapong Tansiri, deputy director of the Tourism Region 5 office, said the rough seas had forced the suspension of speedboat and ferry services operating in Trat.

The weather bureau has also issued warnings of heavy downpours in Surat Thani, Nakhon Si Thammarat, Phatthalung, Songkhla, Pattani, Yala and Narathiwat over the next several days.
